Axminster Carpets Ladies Club Talk

Tuesday 4th February | Village Hall | 7.30pm

Our next speaker is Jonathan Young, Managing Director of Axminster Carpets, who will tell us about the history, production and development of Axminster Carpets, which should be both interesting and enlightening.

Whilst visiting Cheapside Market, London, Devon-based weaver Thomas Whitty was impressed by a large Turkish carpet he saw. On his return to Axminster, he used his skills to work out how to produce a product of similar quality. After several months work he completed his first carpet on midsummer’s day 1755. Axminster Carpets were born!

Come and find our more about the history of this local industry. All welcome. Guests £2.
