Hawkchurch History Society – Autumn Talk, November 2024

November 11 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Dancing through the War

– Nursing in the West County during WW2.

Illustrated with excerpts from his mother’s wartime diaries for the years 1936 – 1945, Dr. Francis Burroughes, B.E.M will recount stories of her experiences of being an Army Nurse before and during the Second World War.  Though hailing from Lancashire, she started her nursing career at Seaton, before moving to London during the Blitz.  Later, she was transferred to Butleigh near Glastonbury; the home of some ‘top-secret nursing’, before moving to her favorite posting, Shaftesbury Military Hospital – world famous for the ground-breaking work of Major Sir John Charnley.

From there she was flown to Dachau, which was her final posting in the closing weeks of the war.
